CHOU Yu-Cheng (born 1976, Taipei) studied at the l’Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-arts de Paris, and the research program - La Seine. He specializes in the interplay between aesthetics and society. His works emphasize the working process behind visual aesthetics with a focus on producing alternative modes of operation and cogitation within established mechanisms, and generating alternative corresponding benefits through "atypical collaborations" which concurrently disclose the problems of existing facts. Chou’s artworks take various forms, wherein he often plays the role of the ‘intermediary,’ in contrast to what he considers the main ‘body’ of his works—the individuals, enterprises, institutions and organizations—that he negotiates with and for. Through manipulation of the "working process,” such as transmitting, transferring, or altering factors such as time, object and place, the results of his projects are thus crystallized, culminating in the formation of a mutual dialectic between the input and output, a scheme which he likes to call "design treachery." In his previous projects, he created an economic discourse-like working process, which resulted in a series of works that contemplate the origins and whereabouts of resources, vacillating between institutions, corporations, museums, art galleries, etc., or creating a language of ‘modernity’ through ‘historical’ clay figurines and bronze sculptures in contemporary biennials. His recent projects gradually shifted to the meditation on "Life", in which he adopts the course of life as his text, launching various collaboration projects with people, such as laborers, artists and teachers. It is apparent that Chou’s practice constantly explores modern interpretation through existing mechanisms, art history, autobiography and other matters, developing their aesthetic expression through sculpture, painting, digital media, literature or theater. Recent solo shows include at Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, Colorado; Taipei Fine Art Museum, Taipei; Kaohsiung Fine Art Museum, Kaohsiung and Edouard Malingue Gallery, Hong Kong and Shanghai. Group exhibitions include in Taipei Biennial 2012, Taipei Fine Art Museum; Queens International 2013, Queens Museum; Asian Art Biennial, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts; The Great Ephemeral, New Museum, New York; Liverpool Biennial. Chou received The Taishin 2011 Annual Visual Art Award and Grand Prize of Taipei Art Award 2012, Taiwan. He lives and works in Taipei, Taiwan.
