This year, news from London has sent ripples through Taiwan’s art world: the British Museum has officially added works by three Taiwanese artists to its permanent collection. It has been approximately sixteen years since a Taiwanese artist was last represented in the museum’s collection. In the past, when major international institutions collected Asian art, the focus was often placed on “ancient Eastern artifacts.” This time, however, the works selected are contemporary creations from Taiwan.

 

Among the selected artists is Ava Hsueh, a leading figure in Taiwan’s contemporary abstract art. Her monumental painting Reaction-Dawu has been acquired for the permanent collection of the British Museum. Hsueh obtained her D.A. degree in Arts from New York University and, after returning to Taiwan, devoted herself to both artistic practice and academia. She has also served as Director of the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, where she played an important role in promoting major international exhibitions and initiatives, including the Asia Biennial.
